About the Role

South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust is recruiting an enthusiastic and clinically confident Specialist Perinatal Mental Health Nurse to join the Lambeth Community Perinatal Team.

The successful candidate will work with women experiencing moderate to severe mental health conditions during the perinatal period and provide specialist assessment, treatment and evidence-based interventions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Manage an individual caseload of approximately 15–30 mothers, infants and families.
  • Undertake comprehensive perinatal assessments.
  • Complete clinical formulation and risk assessments.
  • Assess safeguarding concerns and make appropriate referrals.
  • Deliver interventions to mothers, infants and families.
  • Provide care in patients’ homes and appropriate community locations.
  • Use evidence-based interventions in accordance with NICE guidance.
  • Develop appropriate packages of care.
  • Lead or participate in complex joint assessments.
  • Prepare reports for referrers, families and other agencies.
  • Develop and share care plans.
  • Attend relevant team and service meetings.
  • Supervise junior members of the team.
  • Provide specialist advice and support.
  • Maintain accurate clinical records.
  • Maintain professional and confidentiality standards.

Essential Qualifications

  • First-level nursing qualification.
  • Current RMN registration with the NMC.
  • Degree and/or Master’s-level qualification in mental health studies.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
  • ENB 998 or equivalent.

Essential Experience

Candidates should have:

  • Relevant psychiatric assessment, intervention and treatment experience.
  • Experience working with people with complex mental health needs.
  • Experience working with mental health problems during pregnancy and the postnatal period.
  • Experience supporting women experiencing depression, anxiety, psychosis and personality difficulties.
  • Experience using evidence-based interventions and NICE guidelines.
  • Experience using clinical and managerial supervision.

Essential Knowledge and Skills

  • Understanding of mood, anxiety, psychosis and personality difficulties.
  • Understanding of their impact on mental wellbeing.
  • Psychological skills relevant to working-age adults with severe and enduring mental health conditions.
  • Knowledge of psychopathology and evidence-based treatments.
  • Ability to work as an autonomous practitioner.
  • Strong partnership-working skills.
  • Ability to work effectively across professional boundaries.

Desirable Knowledge

  • Quality improvement knowledge.
  • Evidence-based models of care.
  • Acute mental health services.
  • Community mental health services.

About the Lambeth Perinatal Service

The Lambeth Perinatal Service operates Monday to Friday, 9am–5pm, providing assessment, intervention and treatment to women experiencing moderate to severe mental health disorders during the perinatal period.
