About the Role

UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI), part of the Home Office, is responsible for decisions on immigration applications and the operation of the UK’s asylum system.

The Appeals, First Tier Tribunals (AFTT) team within Asylum and Human Rights Operations handles appeals and legal challenges to immigration decisions. Presenting Officers represent the Secretary of State in tribunal hearings and review cases to ensure that decisions are properly supported and defended.

In this role, you will prepare and present cases independently, examine evidence, assess the strength of decisions and make structured legal submissions in a challenging environment. The position offers an opportunity to develop expertise in immigration law, advocacy and decision-making.

The work can be demanding, requiring resilience, concentration, sound judgement and the ability to respond professionally to challenges from legal representatives and Immigration Judges.

Key Responsibilities

Your duties will include:

  • Representing the Secretary of State at First-tier Immigration Tribunal hearings on approximately 60% of your working days.
  • Preparing and presenting cases, reviewing decisions and legal representations, and identifying relevant evidence.
  • Developing and maintaining a strong understanding of immigration law, policy and procedures.
  • Delivering structured submissions and conducting cross-examination in an adversarial legal environment.
  • Responding professionally to challenges and adapting to changes in court listings and operational priorities.
  • Completing post-hearing work accurately and within required deadlines.
  • Reviewing immigration cases when tribunal attendance is not possible or other operational requirements arise.
  • Building effective working relationships with Immigration Judges, HM Courts and Tribunals Service staff, legal representatives and Home Office colleagues.

Working Hours and Attendance

The position is available on a full-time basis, with part-time working also considered.

Part-time employees must work at least 30 hours over four days each week because of business requirements.

You may be required to attend tribunal hearings for up to 60% of your contracted working days. Office attendance is also required for training, mentoring and team engagement, typically once every fortnight.

Although some Home Office roles may offer a combination of office and home working, the advert states that employees are expected to spend at least 60% of their working time in an office, where applicable.

Occasional travel to other tribunal hearing centres may also be required, depending on your location.
