About the Role
As a Peer Support Worker, you will use your own lived experience of mental health recovery to encourage, motivate, and empower individuals receiving primary care mental health services.
Working alongside clinicians and other healthcare professionals, you will help people build confidence, develop recovery plans, achieve meaningful goals, and connect with community support services.
Your ability to safely share your recovery journey while maintaining professional boundaries will play a vital role in supporting service users.
The role also involves travelling within the local area, so access to independent transport is essential.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver one-to-one peer support sessions.
- Build trusting relationships that inspire hope and recovery.
- Share practical coping strategies and self-management techniques.
- Assist individuals in setting and achieving personal recovery goals.
- Support service users to attend appointments and community activities where appropriate.
- Signpost people to local community services and support networks.
- Contribute to personalised Recovery Action Plans.
- Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
- Maintain accurate electronic records.
- Report concerns or changes in wellbeing according to Trust procedures.
- Participate in supervision, mandatory training, and professional development.
- Complete the Level 3 Apprenticeship Framework if not already achieved.
Essential Requirements

- Personal lived experience of accessing primary mental health services.
- An understanding of recovery-focused practice.
- Knowledge of the challenges experienced by mental health service users.
- Experience providing support or encouragement to others.
- Experience working within a team environment.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to maintain professional boundaries.
- Good problem-solving abilities.
- Basic IT skills.
- Flexibility, resilience, and emotional maturity.
- Access to independent transport.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
The Trust welcomes applicants with:
- Level 3 NVQ, QCF, OCN or equivalent qualification in Health & Social Care.
- Knowledge of local community resources.
- Experience working or volunteering within health or social care.
- Experience mentoring, coaching, teaching, or training others.
- Good working knowledge of IT systems.
