JOB OVERVIEW

West London NHS Trust is seeking a qualified and experienced Technician (Plumber) to join its busy London Estates Maintenance Department.

The successful candidate will provide multi-skilled plumbing and mechanical maintenance services across the Trust’s London sites.

This is a permanent, full-time Band 5 position involving planned and reactive maintenance, fault-finding, repairs, servicing and technical support relating to mechanical, heating, hot and cold water, gas and ventilation systems.

SALARY AND RECRUITMENT & RETENTION PREMIA

£36,943 – £44,900 per annum

A £4,700 gross annual Recruitment & Retention Premia (RRP), pro rata, also applies, subject to review each financial year.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Carry out routine and non-routine plumbing and mechanical works.
• Undertake planned preventative maintenance.
• Carry out repairs and fault-finding.
• Maintain heating systems and hot and cold water services.
• Work with mechanical and gas plant and equipment.
• Support ventilation systems and associated services.
• Carry out building-related maintenance works where required.
• Operate, maintain and service plant and equipment.
• Diagnose faults across mechanical systems.
• Interpret technical drawings, manuals and documentation.
• Operate Building Management Systems where required.
• Maintain accurate maintenance records.
• Provide technical advice and support to maintenance staff and contractors.
• Provide technical guidance and supervision to staff.
• Support audits, surveys and inspections.
• Test new equipment and systems.
• Ensure appropriate tools and PPE are used and maintained.
• Support safe systems of work and risk assessments.
• Work across different London sites.
• Participate in out-of-hours on-call rotas.
• Deputise for senior colleagues when required.

HEALTH & SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES

The post holder will work as a competent person within relevant regulatory and NHS technical frameworks, including:

• Health and safety requirements
• Water safety
• Gas safety
• Pressure Systems Safety Regulations (PSSR 2000)
• Relevant NHS Health Technical Memoranda (HTMs)
• Legionella management
• Safe systems of work
• Risk assessments
• Trust policies and procedures

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

• Recognised Plumbing qualification such as City & Guilds Certificate or NVQ Level 3, or another recognised qualification at the appropriate level.
• Domestic/Commercial Gas Safe certification.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

• IOSH or equivalent health and safety qualification.
• HTM Competent Person qualification/experience.
• NHC or HND in a related field.

ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE

Candidates should demonstrate:

• Significant experience working within an NHS environment.
• Significant experience with mechanical and gas installations.
• Experience managing safe systems of work.
• Strong technical mechanical knowledge.
• Knowledge of engineering, electrical and building maintenance.
• Sound understanding of health and safety legislation.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE

• Experience across electrical and building trades.
• Approximately one year of supervisory experience.
• Broader experience within an NHS estates or facilities environment.
