About the Risk Management Fast Stream

Risk management plays an important role in government decision-making. It helps departments understand potential threats, assess their overall risk exposure and take appropriate action to manage uncertainty.

As a Risk Management Fast Streamer, you will join the Government Risk Profession at a time when it is continuing to develop and strengthen risk management across the Civil Service.

The role focuses on helping government organisations become more resilient, prepare for unexpected events and make informed decisions while pursuing opportunities.

It also provides a foundation for future progression into leadership roles within the government risk profession.

Location and Departmental Placement

Your specific location will depend on the department to which you are assigned and its available offices.

As an indication, new Fast Streamers in 2026 were placed in government offices in Greater London and the North West. Locations may change from year to year.

Some candidates may need to relocate. The recruitment team will try to accommodate location preferences where possible, but final decisions will depend on business requirements.

Eligibility Requirements

1. Initial Application

Applicants will provide background information, answer diversity-monitoring questions and indicate their preferences for Fast Stream schemes.

2. Online Assessments

There are two initial online tests:

  • Work-based Scenarios: Assesses interpersonal skills through video-based scenarios. Candidates evaluate the effectiveness of different responses to workplace situations.
  • Case Study Assessment: Presents work-based scenarios involving an imaginary role. Candidates must review information, respond to challenges and adapt to changing circumstances.

3. Additional Scheme Information

Depending on the schemes selected, applicants may need to provide additional information or complete an intermediate sift.

4. Fast Stream Assessment Centre

Candidates who pass the earlier stages may be invited to a virtual, half-day Fast Stream Assessment Centre.

The assessment includes:

  • A written exercise.
  • An oral briefing exercise.
  • A personal development conversation.

5. Final Selection Board

Most schemes require a Final Selection Board. Candidates who meet the required standard at the assessment centre may be invited to this final stage.

Reasonable adjustments are available to support candidates throughout the application process.

Security Checks

Successful candidates must undergo the required pre-employment checks, including a basic criminal record check or equivalent.

Candidates must also meet the applicable security requirements, including Security Check (SC) clearance where required, and complete the Baseline Personnel Security Standard checks.
