Westminster City Council is recruiting Libraries and Archives Apprentices to join its library service in London.

This is an opportunity to gain practical experience in a public-facing library and archives environment while developing skills in customer service, events, digital resources and library operations.

About the Role

As a Libraries and Archives Apprentice, you will contribute to Westminster City Council’s ambition to provide an inclusive library service where people can read, learn and connect.

The role involves a wide range of customer-facing duties and provides an opportunity to develop experience across library services and day-to-day operations.

Depending on the library location, your responsibilities may include:

  • Answering enquiries and providing information to customers
  • Signposting customers to relevant facilities and services
  • Supporting customers with self-service equipment, PCs and other resources
  • Helping people develop confidence and skills to read, learn and connect
  • Supporting customers in making informed choices about health and wellbeing
  • Helping organise, promote and facilitate events for children and adults
  • Supporting library health and safety procedures
  • Using IT equipment and following financial processes
  • Carrying out routine administrative duties
  • Supporting membership processes and stock management
  • Helping with timetabling, cash handling and ordering supplies
  • Opening and closing the library when required

About You

Westminster City Council is looking for an enthusiastic reader and learner who is passionate about sharing their interests with adults and children using the library service.

You should have an interest in areas such as:

  • Literature
  • Arts and music
  • Current affairs
  • Technology and the wider connected world

You should also be confident using the internet, applications, platforms, computers and other devices and be able to demonstrate their use to customers.

As this is a public-facing position, you should have excellent communication skills and be friendly and approachable. The council is also looking for someone who can work collaboratively with colleagues, creative partners, stakeholders and people from diverse communities.

Applicants should normally have Level 2 qualifications in English and Maths. However, candidates who have not yet achieved these qualifications will be supported to develop them while working in the role.
