About the Role

Shetland Islands Council is recruiting a Modern Apprentice Building Maintenance Technician based at Gremista in Lerwick.

The successful apprentice will be supported throughout the programme to become a qualified Building Maintenance Technician while gaining practical experience across the Council’s estate.

The role involves assisting with surveying services and providing advice on estates and property matters, including building condition, defects and appropriate remedies.

You will work across Council buildings, including schools and care home settings, alongside a small team of professionals taking projects from design and planning through to completion.

Training and Qualifications

This is a 4-year apprenticeship programme designed to provide both formal qualifications and practical, on-the-job experience.

Over the four years, the apprentice will work towards:

• HNC in Construction Management
• SVQ Level 3 in Built Environment Design – first 2 years
• SVQ Level 4 in Built Environment Design Management – following 2 years

You will also receive support, mentoring and on-the-job guidance from the Team Leader – Building and Burial Services and other members of the team.

What You’ll Learn

The apprenticeship will provide experience in supporting the definition, organisation and delivery of:

• Building repairs
• Property maintenance
• Alteration works
• Surveying activities
• Building condition assessments
• Identifying defects and suitable remedies
• Ensuring works meet operational and statutory requirements
• Health and safety requirements
• Maintaining the function and value of Council properties

Working Hours and Salary

The position is full-time, 37 hours per week and is based at Gremista, Lerwick.

The advertised salary is £29,099.52 to £30,257.92 per year, inclusive of a Distant Islands Allowance of £2,997 per year (pro rata).

• This is a 4-year apprenticeship.
