This is an opportunity for an experienced healthcare support worker to help care for pregnant women, new mothers, newborn babies and their families. The successful candidate will work alongside midwives and other healthcare professionals to provide safe, compassionate and person-centred care.

About the Role

The successful candidate will join the Community Midwifery Team or work in hospital-based maternity services, including the Antenatal Clinic, Maternity Day Assessment Unit and Maternity Triage.

You will support the delivery of antenatal and postnatal services, helping women and families receive appropriate care, practical guidance and health information.

The position involves working under the supervision of registered nurses and midwives while carrying out delegated clinical duties in accordance with Trust policies and professional standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support midwives in providing maternity care in hospital and community settings.
  • Assist with postnatal care, including breastfeeding support and newborn blood spot screening.
  • Help with baby weighing, phlebotomy and low-risk postnatal home visits.
  • Support postnatal clinics and antenatal and breastfeeding education sessions.
  • Provide practical advice and health promotion information to women and their families.
  • Record patient observations and report changes in clinical conditions.
  • Carry out delegated clinical care duties under the supervision of a registered nurse or midwife.
  • Maintain patients’ privacy, dignity, safety and wellbeing.
  • Follow Trust policies and contribute to a safe, person-centred care environment.
  • Participate in training, personal development and activities that maintain care standards.

Essential Requirements

Applicants should have:

  • A completed Care Certificate.
  • Experience working at Band 2 as a Nursing Healthcare Support Worker.
  • Customer care experience.
  • Experience using computers and a willingness to learn local computer systems.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team and independently when required.
  • A compassionate, sensitive and professional approach to patients, families and colleagues.
  • Knowledge of data protection and health and safety requirements.
  • The ability to identify potential risks and report concerns to the appropriate personnel.

Desirable Qualifications and Experience

The following would be advantageous:

  • Relevant specialist training and evidence of clinical competencies.
  • A vocational qualification at Level 3 or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Completion of short courses relating to patient and clinical care.
  • A Bedside Emergency Assessment Course for Healthcare Assistants (BEACH), or willingness to undertake it.
  • Experience taking clinical observations.
  • Experience supporting quality improvement audits or research activities.
  • Venepuncture and cannulation skills.
  • Competence in ECG lead placement for cardiac monitoring and 12-lead ECGs.
  • Previous experience supporting patients with complex health needs.
