The programme is divided into three stages:

Stage 1: Induction and Introduction – First 3 Months

You will join the Tax and Customs Compliance Academy for full-time training, learning about HMRC, the role and the foundations of compliance work. At least 60% of your working time will be spent in the office during this initial 12-week period.

Stage 2: Core Compliance Training – Next 6 Months

You will develop your technical and procedural knowledge and practise the skills needed to handle compliance cases.

Stage 3: Specialist Development – Final 9 Months

You will move into a Customer Compliance Group business area and work within a specific tax specialism, developing your practical experience and technical expertise.

The programme is designed to be completed within 18 months, although extensions of up to 30 months may be permitted in exceptional circumstances.

Important training conditions:

  • All trainees must be available for the designated cohort start date.
  • The first 12 weeks are full-time.
  • Part-time working of at least 22 hours per week may be available after the first 12 weeks, subject to approval.
  • Training sessions and scheduled learning activities are compulsory.
  • Annual leave is not normally permitted during the first two weeks of training.
  • Alternative internal job applications are not normally authorised during the training programme.

Working Hours and Hybrid Arrangements

HMRC operates a hybrid working model, with employees generally expected to spend 60% of their working time in the office.

Where the role permits and your home-working environment is suitable, you may work from home for up to 40% of your time.

Compliance Caseworkers work within HMRC’s operating hours of 7:00 am to 8:00 pm, Monday to Saturday, completing their contracted hours within this window.

Full-time, part-time, flexible working and job-share arrangements are advertised. However, the initial 12 weeks of training must be completed full-time.

Application and Selection Process

The recruitment process involves several stages:

  1. Eligibility form.
  2. Full application form.
  3. Caseworker Skills Test.
  4. Civil Service Numerical Test.
  5. Civil Service Judgement Test.
  6. Pre-recorded video interview.
  7. Virtual in-tray assessment.

Candidates must meet the required standard at each stage. Passing the online tests does not automatically guarantee an interview, and applicants must pass both the interview and the in-tray assessment to qualify for appointment.

Key application deadlines:

  • Full application: Wednesday, 21 October 2026, by 2:00 pm.
  • Caseworker Skills Test: Thursday, 22 October 2026, by 11:00 am.
  • Numerical Test: Thursday, 22 October 2026, by 1:00 pm.
  • Judgement Test: Thursday, 22 October 2026, by 3:00 pm.

Applicants are advised to complete the online tests within 24–48 hours of receiving the invitation. Late applications and late test submissions will not be accepted.

If successful at the testing stage, you may receive an invitation to a pre-recorded video interview from 2 November 2026. Interview invitations must be acted upon within seven days. The virtual in-tray assessment is expected to take place between 14 and 18 December 2026.

Final results are expected from 8 February 2027, although the recruitment timetable may change.

Right to Work and Visa Sponsorship

This vacancy does not offer Skilled Worker visa sponsorship.

HMRC has assessed the position against its own criteria and Home Office requirements and confirmed that it cannot sponsor successful applicants for a Skilled Worker visa.

This means the role is not suitable for applicants who need employer sponsorship to work in the UK. Applicants must meet the published nationality and eligibility requirements and have the necessary right to work.

Eligible groups listed in the advert include British citizens, Irish citizens, qualifying Commonwealth citizens with the right to work in the UK, and certain other groups with the required immigration status.

Additional Information

Successful candidates will undergo the required pre-employment checks, including a standard criminal record check and baseline personnel security checks.

Applicants who have lived outside the UK for a total of six months or more during the previous five years must provide overseas police certificates for the relevant countries.

Candidates who pass the online tests and interview but do not pass the in-tray assessment may be considered for suitable Administrative Officer-level vacancies within HMRC, where available and where eligibility requirements are met.

How to Apply

Applications must be submitted online through the official Civil Service Jobs website before the deadline.

Closing date: Wednesday, 21 October 2026, at 2:00 pm.

Read the eligibility requirements carefully and select only a location you can realistically travel to and work from.
