About the Role

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is recruiting 108 Work Coaches to support people claiming Universal Credit and other benefits as they work towards employment and financial independence.

This is an opportunity to join one of the UK’s largest public service departments in a permanent Executive Officer role. You will help customers overcome barriers to employment, improve their job-search skills and access the support they need to find, maintain and progress in work.

The role involves working directly with customers, employers and colleagues through face-to-face appointments, telephone conversations and digital services.

Key Responsibilities

As a Work Coach, your duties will include:

  • Supporting customers claiming Universal Credit, Employment and Support Allowance, Jobseeker’s Allowance and Income Support.
  • Helping people search for jobs effectively and identify suitable employment opportunities.
  • Providing clear advice and guidance tailored to individual circumstances.
  • Building positive relationships that motivate customers and help them move closer to employment.
  • Understanding local employment opportunities and services provided by partner organisations.
  • Referring customers to appropriate support based on their needs.
  • Making timely decisions and managing your customer caseload effectively.
  • Ensuring customers receive fair treatment and appropriate support in line with the Equality Act 2010.
  • Using computer systems and digital tools to deliver an effective public service.

Who Can Apply?

DWP is looking for customer-focused applicants who can communicate effectively, understand complex information and explain it clearly to people from diverse backgrounds.

You should be able to demonstrate:

  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to explain information clearly and support customers in improving their employment prospects.
  • Confidence using computer systems and digital job-search tools.
  • The ability to handle telephone enquiries professionally.
  • Calmness and sound judgement when dealing with difficult situations.
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team in a busy environment.
  • Confidence carrying out the spoken aspects of the role in English.

You must also be willing and able to work face-to-face with customers at your assigned Jobcentre.

Is previous DWP experience required? The advertised selection assessments do not require specific DWP knowledge or experience. Applicants should nevertheless demonstrate the skills and behaviours needed for the role.
