Job Overview

Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust is recruiting a Medical Technologist Apprentice – Annex 21 to join the Technical Services team at the Lane Fox Respiratory Unit at St Thomas’ Hospital in London.

This is a 4-year Band 4 Annex 21 developmental post incorporating a 3-year Degree Apprenticeship programme.

The successful candidate will develop technical and clinical engineering skills while supporting the maintenance, servicing, installation and safe use of respiratory and ventilation equipment used in hospitals, satellite units and patients’ homes.

The apprenticeship combines academic study with supervised workplace learning, providing an opportunity to develop specialist experience in healthcare engineering and medical technology.

Following successful completion of the apprenticeship and required competencies, the successful apprentice is expected to progress to a substantive Band 5 Medical Technologist role.

About the Apprenticeship

The successful candidate will:

• Undertake and successfully complete a recognised Degree Apprenticeship in an engineering discipline.
• Participate in academic study alongside supervised workplace training.
• Follow a structured competency framework and training plan.
• Develop practical skills in medical equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.
• Gain experience working with respiratory and ventilation equipment.
• Develop communication skills for working with patients and healthcare professionals.
• Build experience across hospital, clinic and community environments.
• Progress towards a substantive Band 5 Medical Technologist position upon successful completion of the programme and competencies.

Main Responsibilities

Technical Support and Equipment Management

• Routine servicing of respiratory and ventilation equipment.
• Preventive maintenance and equipment checks.
• Fault-finding and troubleshooting under supervision.
• System-level fault diagnosis.
• Basic component-level assessment.
• Escalation of complex technical problems to senior staff.
• Ensuring equipment is mechanically and electrically safe.
• Working in accordance with Trust policies and medical device regulations.
• Maintaining accurate servicing, repair and equipment-status records.
• Using specialist testing and calibration equipment.
• Caring for and maintaining specialist technical equipment.

Clinical and Community Support

• Installing respiratory and ventilation equipment.
• Setting up equipment for clinical and community use.
• Servicing and collecting equipment.
• Supporting patient discharge arrangements.
• Providing technical input to help maintain continuity of patient care.
• Participating in community-based services.
• Supporting home visits.
• Participating in remote equipment set-up pathways.
• Communicating with patients, families and carers about safe equipment use.

Communication and Multidisciplinary Team Working

• Providing clear technical advice to consultants.
• Working with nurses, physiotherapists and other healthcare professionals.
• Communicating effectively with patients and carers.
• Working collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Escalating technical, clinical and safety concerns appropriately.
• Developing professional judgement and communication skills.

Essential Requirements

Education

• GCSE Grade 4/C or above in English Language and Mathematics, or equivalent.
• Functional Skills Level 2 may be accepted as an equivalent.
• A Level 3 qualification in a relevant STEM subject, such as Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or Electronics.
• Eligibility to meet the entry requirements for an approved Healthcare Engineering/Clinical Engineering Degree Apprenticeship programme.
• Minimum 96 UCAS tariff points, or equivalent qualifications accepted by the partnered apprenticeship provider/university.
