Job Overview
University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a dedicated and experienced Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN) to join its Children’s Services team in Worthing. This Band 6 position offers an exciting opportunity to support children and young people experiencing mental health challenges across paediatric inpatient wards and the Children’s Emergency Department.
The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering specialist mental health assessments, risk management, care planning, therapeutic interventions, and staff support while working closely with multidisciplinary teams.
This role is eligible for UK Skilled Worker visa sponsorship, subject to meeting UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) requirements, including salary and skill thresholds.
About the Role
As a Registered Mental Health Nurse within Children’s Services, you will provide specialist mental health support to children and young people who present with a wide range of mental health needs.
You will collaborate with paediatric ward teams, emergency department staff, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), eating disorder services, and other healthcare professionals to ensure safe, timely, and coordinated care.
The role focuses on improving patient outcomes, reducing unnecessary escalation, supporting discharge planning, and helping to create a sustainable mental health care model across Children’s Services.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct specialist mental health nursing assessments.
- Develop and implement individualized care plans.
- Assess and manage clinical risks effectively.
- Deliver therapeutic interventions and emotional support.
- Work collaboratively with CAMHS and multidisciplinary teams.
- Support children and young people admitted to paediatric wards.
- Provide mental health expertise within the Children’s Emergency Department.
- Assist with discharge planning and continuity of care.
- Offer guidance and support to ward staff and Enhanced Care Support Workers.
- Participate in service development and quality improvement initiatives.
- Promote patient safety and positive care experiences.
- Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation.
Essential Requirements
Applicants should possess:
- Current registration as a Mental Health Nurse.
- Relevant experience working with children and young people experiencing mental health difficulties.
- Strong assessment and risk management skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
- Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
- Knowledge of safeguarding principles and child-centred care.
- Commitment to delivering high-quality mental health services.
Desirable Skills and Experience
- Previous experience within CAMHS services.
- Experience supporting young people with eating disorders.
- Experience in acute hospital or emergency care settings.
- Leadership, supervision, or mentoring experience.
- Understanding of service improvement methodologies.
