Job Overview

Whittington Health NHS Trust is recruiting a Painter and Decorator to join its Estates and Facilities Team in London.

This is a permanent, full-time Band 4 position offering a salary of £34,186 to £37,389 per year, inclusive of Inner HCAs per annum.

The successful candidate will carry out painting, decorating, surface preparation and minor make-good repairs across the Trust’s buildings, helping to ensure facilities remain presentable, well maintained and fit for purpose.

About the Role

The Painter and Decorator will be responsible for delivering planned and reactive painting and decorating work across Trust buildings.

The role involves preparing surfaces, applying paints and decorative finishes, carrying out minor wall make-good work and supporting the wider Estates and Facilities Team.

You will be expected to complete assigned work within the required priority and report any incomplete work or issues to the Helpdesk.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Painting and Decorating

• Internal and external painting of walls, ceilings, woodwork and metalwork.
• Surface preparation, including filling, sanding and priming.
• Application of specialist finishes for clinical environments where required.
• Use of low-VOC and antimicrobial paints where appropriate.
• Wallpaper application and removal.
• Touch-up and patch repairs following building works or minor damage.
• Application of protective coatings to surfaces affected by moisture or wear.
• Minor plaster patching and surface make-good work before redecoration.
• Day-to-day painting, decorating and minor repair work across Trust assets.

Estates and Facilities Support

• Support the wider Estates and Facilities Team.
• Assist multi-skilled engineering and building craftspersons.
• Contribute to planned painting and decorating programmes.
• Work from appropriate instructions, drawings and specifications.
• Report building defects, surface damage and hazards to the Helpdesk and Line Manager.
• Assist the Estates Manager in achieving departmental objectives.
• Work within defined technical parameters, including relevant HTMs.
• Prioritise your own workload effectively.
• Discuss work-related issues with your Line Manager.
• Undertake additional duties delegated by your Team Leader or Management.

Health and Safety Responsibilities

• Use tools and equipment in accordance with manufacturers’ instructions.
• Follow applicable health and safety procedures.
• Ensure work areas are secure.
• Maintain the security of plant, equipment and buildings.
• Ensure plant rooms remain locked when required.
• Report hazards and defects promptly.
• Work safely at heights and in confined spaces.
• Carry out manual handling activities safely.
• Understand and apply relevant risk assessment procedures.

Training and Development

The successful candidate will participate in appropriate training courses and updates in accordance with mandatory requirements and their Personal Development Plan.

You will also work with your Line Manager to ensure mandatory training and PADs remain up to date.

Essential Qualifications

• GCSE standard education at Grade C or above, or equivalent.
• City & Guilds NVQ Level 2 or Level 3 in Painting and Decorating, or an equivalent technical qualification.

Essential Skills

• Strong painting and decorating skills.
• Knowledge of surface preparation and application of paints and decorative finishes.
• Ability to work at heights.
• Ability to climb ladders and scaffolding.
• Ability to work in confined spaces.
• Ability to carry out manual handling tasks.
• IT skills and ability to use mobile devices associated with estates maintenance.
• Good written and verbal communication skills.

Essential Knowledge and Experience

• In-depth knowledge of the Health and Safety at Work Act.
• Knowledge of Approved Codes of Practice and current regulations relevant to the discipline.
• Minimum of 5 years’ experience working within an NHS Estates and Facilities organisation or similar.
• Legionella Awareness.
• Asbestos Awareness.
• Knowledge of risk assessments.
