About the Role
The Central Mental Health Law Team is looking for MHA Coordinators to support the effective administration of the Mental Health Act 1983 and help clinical teams maintain compliance with statutory requirements.
The successful candidates will provide specialist administrative support, work closely with clinical teams and help coordinate Mental Health Tribunal and Associate Hospital Managers hearing processes.
The role will also involve reviewing compliance information, identifying areas requiring improvement and helping frontline teams address potential Mental Health Act issues before errors occur.
Candidates should have experience in Mental Health Act administration, legal-related work or a strong administrative environment, together with excellent organisational skills and attention to detail.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidates will:
- Provide administrative support to the Senior MHA Coordinator and MHA Team Leader.
- Provide additional support to the Associate Hospital Managers hearing team when required.
- Deliver Mental Health Act administration to individual wards through the Trust’s newly created MHA In-Reaching Model.
- Support the Senior MHA Coordinator with weekly monitoring of Mental Health Act actions and compliance.
- Review data to identify areas where improved MHA compliance and good-practice measures are required.
- Work with frontline clinical teams to identify and address potential Mental Health Act issues.
- Attend clinical reviews and relevant meetings when necessary.
- Arrange and coordinate Mental Health Tribunal and Associate Hospital Managers hearings and reviews.
- Support patients’ rights through effective liaison with relevant hearing and tribunal services.
- Maintain accurate and orderly records, including the MHA section of patient records and relevant registers and logs.
- Provide administrative support to the Mental Health Law and Tribunal teams.
- Deputise for the Senior MHA Coordinator when required.
- Organise and facilitate patient hearings.
- Liaise professionally with patients, carers, staff and external stakeholders regarding the operation of the Mental Health Act.
- Help maintain the standards and professional profile of the Mental Health Law Team.
- Support Care Quality Commission visits at short notice when required.
- Provide cover across Trust sites when necessary.
Requirements / Person Specification
Essential qualifications:
- GCSE or equivalent in English and Maths.
Essential experience:
- Experience using IT software.
- Ability to use databases and spreadsheets.
- In-depth knowledge of office procedures.
- Experience working in a secretarial or administrative capacity.
Desirable experience:
- Experience in legal-related work.
- Experience working in a mental health treatment setting.
- Experience of the operation of the Mental Health Act.

Salary & Benefits
The position is offered at NHS Agenda for Change Band 4, with a salary of £34,186 to £37,389 per annum, inclusive of HCAS pro rata.
The role is permanent and available on either a full-time or part-time basis.

- 1 x Full-time: 37.5 hours per week
- 1 x Part-time: 30 hours per week
The successful candidate may also be required to provide cover across Trust sites.
