About the Role

The Home Office’s Immigration and Citizenship Service manages the UK’s immigration, citizenship, resettlement and identity systems.

The Status Review Unit investigates allegations that immigration status or leave to remain was obtained through deception. Its work includes reviewing cases involving refugee status, Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), EU Settlement Scheme status and British citizenship.

As a Status Review Unit Caseworker, you will investigate complex cases, assess evidence and make robust, legally sound decisions. You will contribute to the Home Office’s work to protect the UK’s borders, reduce illegal immigration and uphold the integrity of immigration and citizenship systems.

Full training and support will be provided to help you develop specialist casework and investigative skills.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a caseload of complex cases independently, ensuring investigations are thorough and decisions are evidence-based.
  • Meet productivity and quality targets while maintaining high standards of decision-making.
  • Apply relevant legislation, policies and guidance relating to deprivation, revocation, cancellation and curtailment of status.
  • Conduct intelligence-led investigations and investigative interviews where appropriate.
  • Record investigative activities, findings and decisions accurately.
  • Participate in case reviews, quality assurance activities and team meetings.
  • Share knowledge, identify best practices and suggest operational improvements.
  • Support different functions within the Status Review Unit as required.
  • Conduct customer interviews through Microsoft Teams.
  • Enrol in the Government Counter Fraud Profession and undertake relevant professional development, including the Counter Fraud Investigator Apprenticeship.

Essential Requirements

Applicants should demonstrate the ability to:

  • Manage workloads effectively while meeting productivity targets and maintaining decision-making quality.
  • Communicate clearly in writing and verbally, including drafting complex decision letters.
  • Analyse information from different sources and reach accurate, legally sound conclusions.
  • Liaise professionally with applicants and stakeholders.
  • Organise competing priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Work flexibly and contribute to positive team outcomes.

Desirable Experience

The following would be advantageous:

  • Previous immigration casework experience.
  • Experience conducting investigative interviews or other investigative work.
  • An accredited Fraud Investigator qualification, or willingness to work towards one.

Important: Immigration casework experience and a Fraud Investigator qualification are desirable, not essential. Applicants should explain how they meet the essential criteria in their personal statement.

Training and Development

The Home Office will provide regular training throughout the year and before new work assignments begin.

Successful applicants must undertake professional development through the Government Counter Fraud Profession. The Counter Fraud Investigator Apprenticeship may help develop further investigative expertise.
