About the Role
As an Overnight SevernSide GP, you will provide urgent primary care to patients through a range of services, including telephone and video consultations, face-to-face appointments and mobile home visits.
You will assess patients, establish appropriate diagnoses and management plans, prescribe where appropriate and identify situations requiring hospital admission or emergency intervention.
The service operates 24 hours a day and combines NHS 111, GP out-of-hours services and other urgent care provision across Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire.
Key Responsibilities
Your responsibilities will include:
- Assessing and managing a wide range of physical and mental health presentations across different age groups.
- Providing urgent clinical consultations by telephone, video and face-to-face appointments.
- Taking referrals from healthcare professionals within the BNSSG area for appropriate adult medical admissions.
- Working constructively with referring healthcare professionals and discussing alternative management options where appropriate.
- Identifying and accessing other urgent care services available within the BNSSG system.
- Supporting community-based management wherever appropriate.
- Recognising serious illness and emergency situations requiring hospital admission or ambulance response.
- Prescribing appropriately within the urgent primary care setting, including initiating or changing end-of-life medications.
- Maintaining clear and comprehensive clinical documentation.
- Seeking advice from the senior GP or Clinical Coordinator when required.
- Supporting new clinicians during their first shift within the SevernSide service.
- Using relevant clinical and IT systems, including CLEO, PACS and EMIS.
- Using clinical decision-making resources such as the Clinical Toolkit, BrisDoc web resources and Remedy.
- Reporting concerns and incidents to support learning and service improvement.
- Supporting BrisDoc’s environmental and sustainability initiatives.
Essential Qualifications and Experience
Applicants must have:
- Full GMC registration and inclusion on the GP Register.
- Inclusion on the NHS England Performer’s List.
- MRCGP qualification.
- Experience and an interest in working across urgent primary care settings.
- Current experience in general practice, community medicine or an Integrated Urgent Care service.
- Recent primary care experience involving effective multidisciplinary team working.
Desirable Experience
The following would be advantageous:
- Teaching experience or involvement in GP training.
- Experience teaching medical students.
- Experience in GP training or clinical supervision.
- Familiarity with the BNSSG healthcare system.
- Acute or general medical experience.
- Knowledge of EMIS.
- Current or recent experience in urgent and unscheduled community care.
- Experience with referral management and primary care/hospital interface decisions.
