Candidates must already have the appropriate right to work in the UK before applying.
If you require a Certificate of Sponsorship to obtain a Skilled Worker visa, this vacancy is not suitable for you.
Recruitment and Selection Process
The recruitment process consists of four main stages. The employer advises that the full process may take several months.
Stage 1: Application Form
Applicants will complete the application form and may provide a CV containing a brief career history. The CV section is not mandatory and will not be scored, so entering N/A in that section is sufficient.
You must select your preferred geographical cluster when applying. Review the available locations carefully before making your choice.
Stage 2: Online Assessments
Shortlisted applicants will be invited to complete two online assessments within a specified timeframe.
- A customer service exercise assessing how you interact with people and maintain professional standards.
- An observation and reporting exercise assessing your ability to notice details, remember information, apply criteria and record findings accurately.
The assessments relate to the three required Civil Service behaviours:
- Communicating and Influencing
- Managing a Quality Service
- Making Effective Decisions
The sift results are anticipated by 21 December 2026.
Stage 3: Interview
Interviews are scheduled to begin on 6 January 2027 and finish during the week commencing 25 January 2027.
Interviews will take place online through Microsoft Teams.
Candidates will be assessed on the three behaviours listed above, as well as their strengths.
Applicants should be prepared to provide examples demonstrating effective communication, customer service, sound judgement and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
Stage 4: Driving Assessment
Candidates who progress to the final stage will be invited to a regional location for a practical driving assessment.
The assessment will take place in a manual vehicle provided by the DVSA and will evaluate your ability to drive safely and confidently across different road types and traffic conditions.
Driving assessments are currently scheduled to begin from 20 January 2027.
Candidates should be prepared to attend on the dates offered, as rescheduling may not be possible.
Additional Checks
Successful candidates will be subject to the relevant pre-employment checks, which include:
- An enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check for new entrant Driving Examiners.
- Baseline Personnel Security Standard checks.
- Applicable employment screening and other checks described in the official advert.
External applicants and current employees of accredited non-departmental public bodies will also undergo a social media check covering publicly available online activity.
Reasonable adjustments can be requested during the recruitment process for applicants who need support because of a disability or other relevant circumstances.
Location and Cluster Selection
DVSA test centres are organised into geographical areas known as clusters. Successful applicants may be appointed to any location within their selected cluster and may be required to conduct tests at multiple centres within that area.
Check the official Clusters List attachment before applying. If your preferred location is not listed, do not apply for this vacancy on the assumption that another location can be offered.
Offers will be made in merit order for each cluster. If an immediate offer is not available, successful candidates may be placed on a reserve list for up to 12 months.
