Job Overview

Bristol NHS Foundation Trust is recruiting Registered Nurses to join its Acute Respiratory Ward (Gate 28A) at Southmead Hospital in Bristol.

This opportunity is open to experienced Registered Nurses with current Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) registration and newly qualified nurses who meet the essential requirements.

You will provide high-quality nursing care to patients with a range of acute and chronic respiratory conditions, working alongside a multidisciplinary healthcare team.

Candidates who require Skilled Worker visa sponsorship are welcome to apply, subject to meeting the role’s requirements and applicable immigration rules.

Key Responsibilities

As a Registered Nurse, your responsibilities will include:

  • Delivering safe, high-quality, evidence-based nursing care to patients.
  • Assessing patients, monitoring their conditions and reporting significant changes to the multidisciplinary team.
  • Administering and managing medication safely in accordance with Trust policies.
  • Supporting patient admissions, assessments, investigations and treatment.
  • Contributing to discharge planning in partnership with other healthcare professionals.
  • Providing health education, advice and support to patients.
  • Supervising and delegating tasks to healthcare support workers, students and other appropriate staff when required.
  • Taking charge of the ward or department in the absence of the person with continuing responsibility.
  • Maintaining accurate patient records and ensuring confidentiality.
  • Responding appropriately to emergencies and following fire, resuscitation and other emergency procedures.
  • Maintaining a safe, therapeutic environment for patients, relatives, visitors and colleagues.
  • Reporting incidents, accidents, complaints and damaged equipment in accordance with Trust procedures.
  • Supporting effective stock management and ensuring nursing supplies and equipment are available.
  • Following manual handling, infection prevention, waste disposal and health and safety procedures.

Essential Qualifications and Requirements

Applicants must meet the following essential criteria:

  • Be a Registered Adult Nurse with current, active UK NMC registration.
  • Provide evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Have completed the relevant extended-role training required by the ward, such as IV drug administration, cannulation, venepuncture, ECGs, male catheterisation, PCA and epidural training.
  • Be currently working in a UK hospital setting as a qualified nurse or qualifying student, as specified in the advert.
  • Demonstrate good verbal and written communication skills, including report writing and record keeping.
  • Be able to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Have basic computer and IT skills and be willing to develop them according to service requirements.
  • Demonstrate workload organisation, time management and basic problem-solving skills.

Important: Current UK professional registration is required. Overseas nursing qualifications alone do not replace the requirement for active UK NMC registration.

Desirable Qualification

A teaching and assessing qualification is desirable. Applicants without this qualification may be expected to undertake the relevant course after two years of post-registration experience, provided they secure a place on the course.

Visa Sponsorship and Certificate of Sponsorship

Bristol NHS Foundation Trust explicitly states that applications from job seekers who require current Skilled Worker sponsorship are welcome and will be considered alongside other applications.

This makes the vacancy worth considering for eligible overseas applicants. However, sponsorship is not guaranteed, and applicants must meet the professional registration, experience, role and immigration requirements.

Before applying, ensure you have current UK NMC registration and meet the essential person specification.
