About the Role

Lambeth CAMHS is recruiting Trainee Child and Young Person’s Wellbeing Practitioners (CWPs) as part of the Children and Young People’s Psychological Trainings (CYP-PT) programme.

This is a training position combining university-based study at King’s College London with practical experience within the Lambeth CAMHS service.

The successful candidate will be trained to deliver evidence-based guided self-help interventions for children and young people experiencing mild to moderate mental health difficulties. They will receive supervision and support while developing their clinical skills and working with children, young people and families referred to the service.

Applicants must be able to start in early/mid-January 2027, as the post cannot be offered to candidates who cannot guarantee this start date.

Training commences on 18 January 2027.

Shortlisted candidates will also need to apply to King’s College London for a place on the Diploma in Child Wellbeing Practice.

Main Duties

The trainee will work within a community-focused children’s mental health service and, under supervision:

  • Assess and deliver outcome-focused, evidence-based interventions for children and young people with mild to moderate mental health difficulties.
  • Work with children, young people and families to support self-management of presenting difficulties.
  • Develop intervention plans and agreed outcomes collaboratively.
  • Deliver guided self-help through face-to-face, telephone and digital methods.
  • Assess risk to self and others and escalate concerns where necessary.
  • Follow agreed referral pathways and signpost unsuitable referrals to appropriate services.
  • Maintain accurate clinical records and use outcome measures to inform decision-making.
  • Attend multidisciplinary meetings where appropriate.
  • Work collaboratively with families, professionals and other agencies.
  • Support initiatives aimed at improving access to children’s mental health services.
  • Complete required data collection and reporting.

Training and Supervision

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Attend and successfully complete all academic, clinical and practice-based elements of the training programme.
  • Participate in university teaching and complete private study requirements.
  • Apply learning from the programme directly to clinical practice.
  • Engage with practice tutoring, academic support and supervision.
  • Prepare and present caseload information during supervision.
  • Respond to feedback and implement recommendations.
  • Participate in reflective supervision and professional development.

About Lambeth CAMHS

The CWP team supports children, young people and parents experiencing mild to moderate mental health difficulties through evidence-based guided self-help interventions.

The team is part of the wider Lambeth CAMHS service and provides opportunities to participate in meetings, reflective practice groups and clinical skills training.

The successful candidate will work within a supportive and nurturing team with links to social care, education, voluntary services, National and Specialist CAMHS, and teaching and research colleagues at King’s College London.

  • An upper second-class degree or above in Psychology or a related subject such as Education, Childhood Development or Social Work.
  • Alternatively, candidates with another degree may be considered where they have relevant further training or experience, such as teaching, learning support, healthcare assistance, youth work or counselling.
  • Relevant professional experience in children’s and young people’s mental health or education may also be considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • Previous experience working with children and young people.
  • Ability to learn through different methods, including remote teaching.
  • Good computer literacy.
  • Ability to study independently and manage progress towards learning objectives.
  • Ability to manage a sensitive and potentially emotionally distressing caseload.
  • Ability to work effectively within a team and develop positive working relationships.

Desirable Experience

Experience of:

  • Working in a mental health setting.
  • Safeguarding issues.
  • Community-based working.
  • Children’s and young people’s mental health, child development or child wellbeing.

Certificate of Sponsorship

Skilled Worker sponsorship is available for eligible candidates.
