About the Role
The Government Digital Service (GDS), part of the Department for Science, Innovation & Technology, is recruiting a Content and Events Officer to support its Digital and Cyber Workforce and Capability team.
The role focuses on creating practical and engaging digital content around events, programmes and people. The successful candidate will turn briefs and strategic direction into content for government channels, including short-form video, photography, social media, blogs and other communications.
The position offers the opportunity to work alongside digital and data professionals involved in major government programmes and initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Turn communications briefs into content ideas, scripts, shot lists, copy and finished assets.
- Capture content before, during and after events, including short videos, interviews, photography and speaker highlights.
- Film and edit short-form video using accessible tools.
- Repurpose events and stories into content for LinkedIn, newsletters, intranet, blogs and partner channels.
- Work with programme and event teams to identify strong stories and opportunities to demonstrate impact.
- Prepare event content such as capture lists, speaker prompts, social copy and post-event materials.
- Maintain a practical content pipeline covering content being created, approved and available for reuse.
- Follow agreed tone, accessibility, branding and approval requirements.
Essential Requirements
Applicants should have:
- Experience creating digital content, ideally including short-form video, photography, social media or event content.
- The ability to take a brief and turn it into practical content outputs.
- Basic filming and editing skills using tools such as a smartphone, Canva, CapCut, Adobe Express, Premiere Rush or equivalent.
- Strong writing and editing skills.
- Good creative judgement and an understanding of audience-appropriate content.
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage deadlines, contributors, approvals and multiple projects.
Desirable Experience
The following would be beneficial:
- Experience capturing content at events, webinars, conferences or stakeholder sessions.
- Experience creating social-first content for LinkedIn, intranets, newsletters, blogs, YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels or similar platforms.
- Knowledge of content planning, accessibility, channel objectives and basic performance measurement.
- Experience in government, the public sector, technology, digital, data, cyber, education or workforce development.

Working Arrangement
The role is based in London or Manchester.
DSIT operates a discretionary hybrid-working policy combining office-based and home working in the UK. The current expectation is for staff to attend an office or other non-home location for 40–60% of the time over the accounting period.
DSIT also states that it does not normally offer full home working, although various flexible working options are available.
Salary and Benefits
The salary range is:
- National: £36,735 – £39,670
- London: £39,850 – £43,020
The department contributes to the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension Scheme, with an employer contribution of 28.97%.
