Job Overview

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust is recruiting a Band 6 Trainee Emergency Practitioner at Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

This is a trainee post for candidates who have completed a Minor Injuries/Illness course at Level 6 or 7 and require support to complete and sign off their competencies.

The role will initially be at Band 6, progressing to Band 7 once the required competencies have been completed and signed off.

Working under supervision and with a degree of autonomy, the successful candidate will assess and manage undifferentiated and undiagnosed minor injuries and minor illnesses within their scope of competence.

Main Responsibilities

The Trainee Emergency Practitioner will:

  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and external providers.
  • Help ensure patients receive appropriate care in the right setting.
  • Support patients to maintain or regain independence and reduce avoidable hospital admissions.
  • Provide operational and professional leadership to junior staff.
  • Support learners and junior colleagues within the Urgent Treatment Centre.
  • Contribute to a positive learning environment and high standards of clinical practice.
  • Participate in the day-to-day running of the service on a shift basis.
  • Promote efficient, innovative and responsive urgent and emergency care services.

Essential Qualifications

Applicants must have one of the following professional registrations:

  • HCPC Registered Physiotherapist

Applicants should also have professional knowledge supported by relevant postgraduate academic study, short courses and clinical competencies, including areas such as:

  • Minor Injury Management Level 6/7
  • Consultation skills
  • Physical examination skills
  • IRMER
  • Interpretation of images / Red Dot course
  • Adult and child life support
  • PGD training and practice
  • Minor Illness Management Level 6/7 or Non-Medical Prescribing
  • Further specialist training to Master’s-equivalent level

Essential Experience

Candidates should have considerable experience working at Band 6 or equivalent, including autonomous assessment of minor injuries and a postgraduate qualification in either Minor Illness or Non-Medical Prescribing.

The role also requires experience or knowledge in:

  • Multidisciplinary healthcare delivery.
  • Primary, secondary and voluntary care pathways.
  • The NHS England Urgent and Emergency Care – Emergency Practitioner Framework 2023.
  • NHS emergency care targets and their relationship to the role.
  • Extended clinical practice relevant to emergency care.
  • Plastering, suturing and wound management/assessment.
  • Supervising, mentoring and assessing learners and junior staff.
  • Leading and managing healthcare teams.
  • Developing and updating policies and procedures.
  • Supporting service change and improvement.
  • UK NHS urgent and emergency care frameworks.

Desirable Experience

  • Previous experience as a Band 6 or equivalent Emergency Practitioner in an urgent or emergency care setting.
  • Experience in staff recruitment and selection.

Working Requirements

The successful applicant must be able to work a flexible shift pattern, including:

  • Nights
  • Weekends
  • Public holidays
  • Out-of-hours work
  • Seven-day service coverage

The ability to travel between UHB sites and external locations may also be required.
