About the role
North Somerset Council is looking for an experienced Digital Content Editor to join its Digital Content Team, which is responsible for keeping the council’s website content up to date.
The successful candidate will work with council services to maintain website content, migrate content from existing microsites to the main website, help build new microsites and make documents accessible across the website portfolio.
The role will also involve working on projects designed to improve customer experience, accessibility and usability across the council’s digital services.
Key responsibilities
- Use a content management system (CMS) to manage and update website content.
- Write, edit and proof-read content for publication in the public domain.
- Work with departments across the council to capture and advise on web content.
- Migrate content from existing microsites to the main website.
- Help build new microsites.
- Support the creation of accessible documents and digital content.
- Contribute to projects focused on customer experience and accessibility.
- Ensure tasks are completed accurately, on time and to the required standard.
- Work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
Essential criteria
Applicants should have:
- At least 5 GCSEs at the minimum accepted pass grade or above, including Maths and English.
- Experience writing, editing and proof-reading text for publication in the public domain.
- The ability to present information in a structured way appropriate to users’ needs.
- Demonstrable accuracy and attention to detail.
- The ability to work independently and manage work received through a workflow process.
- Experience working as part of a team to achieve deadlines.
- Sound knowledge and experience of information systems such as email, Word, Excel and Teams, ideally including web content management systems.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills, including negotiation and problem-solving.
- The ability to complete tasks on time and to the required standard.
- The ability to adapt quickly to new software.
- Experience working with senior officers and developing positive working relationships.
Desirable experience
The following would be advantageous:
- Web content writing and editing.
- Awareness of usability and accessibility issues relating to digital services and communications.
- Basic understanding of WCAG 2.2 accessibility, usability and readability.
- Experience organising content into usable sections within an existing information architecture.
- Experience converting complex information into Plain English.
- Understanding of accessibility issues surrounding PDFs.
Working arrangements
This role is classed as a Mobile/Field Worker.
You can expect to:
- Work 0–1 day in the office.
- Primarily work remotely where appropriate.
- Attend the office for meetings or focused work.
- Use portable technology to work effectively while on the go.
During the induction period, additional office attendance may be required to support learning and development.
