Job Overview
Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust is recruiting a Therapy Support Worker to support the delivery of high-quality therapy management for patients receiving physiotherapy and occupational therapy.
The role aims to help patients maximise their independence and support safe discharge planning. The successful candidate will manage a delegated clinical caseload under the support and supervision of a registered therapist, working with autonomy and making decisions within agreed clinical protocols.
Key Responsibilities
The Therapy Support Worker will:
- Lead protocol-driven exercises and treatments for individual patients following assessment and treatment planning by a qualified therapist.
- Assist therapists with planning activities and therapy programmes.
- Support, participate in and run group treatment sessions, providing feedback where appropriate.
- Work with minimal or no immediate supervision from a qualified therapist when appropriate.
- Use clinical judgement to progress or make minor modifications to treatment programmes within agreed protocols and parameters.
- Report any significant changes in a patient’s health status to the relevant qualified healthcare professional.
- Manage clinical risk across the delegated caseload and ensure patients’ safety and security.
- Safely use equipment such as hoists, standing frames and mobility aids.
- Demonstrate and practise safe equipment and mobility-aid techniques with patients and carers.
- Liaise with patients and carers, including those who may be distressed, to obtain relevant information under appropriate therapist supervision.
- Support patients and carers during discussions involving end-of-life care and other emotionally distressing issues.
Essential Qualifications and Experience
Applicants should have:
- General education to A level or equivalent and/or NVQ Level 3 in Promoting Independence, Care, AHP Support Worker or an equivalent health apprenticeship/vocational qualification.
- Significant previous experience as a therapy assistant or equivalent in a healthcare setting.
- Experience of effective multidisciplinary team working.
- Experience of administrative duties such as data collection and management.
Desirable Experience
The Trust would also welcome candidates with:
- Further education or study in health, social sciences or a related subject.
- A Care Certificate.
- Previous experience working in an acute hospital environment.
- Knowledge of different therapy approaches across professional groups.
- Previous NHS experience.
- Experience working with adults with acquired cognitive or communication difficulties and/or challenging behaviour.
