About the Summer Internship Programme

The Summer Internship Programme (SIP) is designed to give talented undergraduates from lower socio-economic backgrounds an opportunity to explore a career in the Civil Service.

Interns will undertake a work placement within a government department, gaining practical experience and learning about the range of careers available across the UK Government.

The programme can also help prepare participants for a future application to a Civil Service Fast Stream graduate scheme.

Duties and Responsibilities

During the internship, you may be involved in challenging, project-related work, including:

  • Conducting research and gathering information.
  • Providing project support.
  • Assisting with the preparation of policy documents.
  • Shadowing senior civil servants.
  • Attending meetings with senior advisers to discuss major issues.

Applicants should demonstrate an interest in a Civil Service career, teamwork, creativity and innovation. You should also be comfortable working with people at different levels of responsibility and be motivated to help improve public services and address important policy issues.

Eligibility Requirements

To apply, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Be in the final two years of university study.
  • Have, or expect to achieve, at least a 2:2 degree in any subject.
  • Come from a lower socio-economic background, assessed using the programme’s specified measures.
  • Have the right to work in the UK.
  • Meet the Civil Service Nationality Rules.

Applicants must also be willing to complete the required departmental security checks before starting the placement. Some positions require Security Check (SC) clearance, which can take up to three months.

Right-to-work and nationality restrictions apply. Meeting the degree requirements alone does not guarantee eligibility.

Fast Pass: Potential Route to a Graduate Scheme

One of the programme’s key benefits is access to the Fast Pass scheme.

If you receive a positive appraisal during your internship and apply to the Fast Stream within 12 months, you may be fast-tracked past the initial online selection stages.

You must complete at least six weeks of the internship to be considered for a Fast Pass.

This provides a potential advantage for undergraduates interested in developing a long-term career in the Civil Service.
