About the Role

Westminster City Council is recruiting two Housing Officers to join its Housing Services team in London. This is an opportunity for people with strong customer service skills who want to support residents, manage housing-related issues and help maintain safe, well-managed communities.

The successful candidates will manage an assigned group of properties, working with social housing tenants, council leaseholders, supported residents and people living in properties outside the borough.

The role involves regular contact with residents, home visits, quarterly property inspections and attendance at local housing surgeries. You will also work with residents to develop and communicate estate action plans.

Key Responsibilities

Your duties will include:

  • Providing a professional and responsive housing management service to residents.
  • Conducting home visits, property inspections and welfare calls.
  • Responding to enquiries, complaints, emails and letters.
  • Supporting vulnerable residents and referring domestic abuse victims to appropriate services.
  • Investigating concerns raised by other council teams and external organisations.
  • Managing nuisance reports, antisocial behaviour cases and tenancy breaches.
  • Taking appropriate enforcement action when tenancy agreements are breached.
  • Conducting housing reviews, renewals, audits and under-occupation visits.
  • Working with repairs teams to inspect vacant properties and investigate repair issues.
  • Helping arrange property viewings and ensuring homes are let promptly.
  • Carrying out initial enquiries into suspected housing fraud.
  • Maintaining accurate case records and managing competing priorities.

Requirements

Applicants should have experience providing high-quality services to members of the public. Previous housing management experience is desirable but not essential.

You should also demonstrate:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A professional, approachable and customer-focused attitude.
  • The ability to work independently in challenging frontline situations.
  • Good organisational skills and the ability to prioritise workloads.
  • Confidence using IT systems and handheld lone-working devices.
  • A flexible approach to occasional evening meetings, emergencies and changing work demands.

Knowledge of tenancy law and general tenancy management would be an advantage.

Westminster City Council is committed to equality, diversity and inclusion. Care leavers applying for their first job may be guaranteed an interview under the council’s scheme if they meet the essential criteria. Applicants with disabilities who meet the essential criteria are also guaranteed an interview under the council’s Disability Confident commitment.

Working Arrangements and Benefits

The usual working hours are 9 am to 5 pm, within a 36-hour working week. Some evening meetings and responses to unexpected emergencies may be required.

The council also offers flexible working patterns and agile working arrangements, depending on operational requirements.

Visa Sponsorship and Right to Work

Visa sponsorship is not confirmed in the vacancy advert. Applicants who require Skilled Worker sponsorship should contact Westminster City Council’s recruitment team to establish whether sponsorship is available for this role before applying.
