About the Approach Social Work Programme

Frontline is recruiting aspiring children’s social workers for its Approach Social Work programme, a fully funded three-year training opportunity for people from a wide range of professional backgrounds.

The programme combines academic study, practical experience and employment opportunities to prepare participants for careers supporting vulnerable children and families.

No previous social work knowledge or experience is required. However, applicants must meet the academic and eligibility requirements and be committed to learning, working and developing professionally throughout the programme.

Funded by the UK Government and delivered by Frontline, the programme offers a route into children’s social work, with practical experience from the beginning.

  • Year 1: Receive a tax-free bursary of £18,000 or £20,000, depending on location, to help with living and travel expenses.
  • Year 2: Earn between £30,000 and £39,000 as a newly qualified children’s social worker.
  • Year 3: Earn up to £44,000 while continuing professional development and completing your master’s degree.
  • Tuition fees: The postgraduate training is fully funded, with no tuition fees payable by participants.
  • Employment: Guaranteed employment as a newly qualified social worker with a local authority after successfully completing Year 1.
  • Ongoing support: Access the Frontline Fellowship for networking, professional development and continued support.

Salary figures are based on self-reported earnings from programme participants in 2024 and 2025.

What You Will Do

As a trainee children’s social worker, you will learn to support children and families facing difficult circumstances and help ensure children are safe and able to thrive.

Your responsibilities and learning activities may include:

  • Visiting children at home or school to understand their circumstances and needs.
  • Working with parents and families experiencing challenging situations.
  • Collaborating with teachers, healthcare professionals and other agencies.
  • Assessing risks and using evidence to inform decisions about children’s welfare.
  • Advocating for children’s safety, needs and best interests.
  • Developing professional judgement, empathy, resilience and self-awareness.
  • Applying academic learning to real-life situations under the guidance of experienced social workers.

The role offers an opportunity to make a meaningful difference to children’s lives while developing the skills required for a professional career in social work.

How the Three-Year Programme Works

Year 1: Training and Practical Experience

During the first year, you will:

  • Begin studying towards a postgraduate diploma in social work.
  • Learn within a local authority social work team.
  • Receive support from experienced social workers, a tutor and a practice educator.
  • Work directly with children and families while applying your learning.
  • Receive a tax-free bursary of £18,000 or £20,000, depending on location.

Years 2 and 3: Employment and Further Study

After successfully completing the first year, you will move into paid employment as a newly qualified children’s social worker.

You will continue to receive training and professional support while completing your master’s degree alongside your work.
