About the Opportunity
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) is seeking to appoint one expert to the Infection Expert Advisory Group (IEAG) of the Commission on Human Medicines (CHM).
This is an opportunity for a highly experienced specialist in viral hepatitis to contribute expert scientific advice on the safety and efficacy of medicines used to treat infections, including HIV, AIDS and viral hepatitis.
The IEAG is an independent advisory committee of the CHM and provides impartial advice to Ministers.

About the Infection Expert Advisory Group
The Infection Expert Advisory Group (IEAG) is an independent advisory committee of the CHM.
The group provides impartial advice to Ministers on the safety and efficacy of medicines used in infections, including:
- HIV
- AIDS
- Viral hepatitis
- Other relevant infectious diseases
Membership includes highly skilled and senior professionals who are well regarded in their respective fields, alongside lay representatives.
Role Summary
The appointed Member must demonstrate the qualities, skills and professional experience required to meet the essential appointment criteria.
The MHRA is particularly interested in candidates with:
- Specialist expertise in viral hepatitis
- Experience in the management and functional cure of viral hepatitis
- An Infectious Diseases (ID) or Virology background
- Experience contributing to expert scientific committees
Specialist Expertise Required
Essential specialist expertise:
- Specialist in Viral Hepatitis
Additional expertise encouraged but not essential:
- HIV medicine
- Other Infectious Diseases sub-specialties
- Viral therapeutics
- Immunotherapy
- Global health issues related to viral hepatitis
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to contribute actively to the work of the Infection Expert Advisory Group.
Responsibilities include:
- Providing expert scientific advice within their field.
- Reviewing and interpreting complex scientific information.
- Formulating evidence-based comments and advice at short notice.
- Contributing to discussions on issues outside their own specialist area where appropriate.
- Participating effectively as a member of an expert scientific committee.
- Supporting the IEAG in providing impartial advice on medicines used for infections.
- Maintaining strict confidentiality regarding the work of the group.
- Declaring relevant conflicts of interest.
- Developing a working knowledge of the UK medicines regulatory framework and procedures.
- Contributing to the work of the EAG in accordance with its values and standards.
Essential Experience & Person Specification
Candidates should be able to demonstrate the following:
Expert Committee Experience
- Ability to operate effectively on an expert scientific committee.
- Current or previous experience of committee membership.
Leadership & Professional Recognition
- Recognised by peers as a leader in their field.
- Examples may include recognition by national academies, Royal Colleges or equivalent professional bodies.
Scientific Analysis
- Ability to assimilate and interpret complex scientific information.
- Ability to formulate evidence-based comments and advice at short notice.
Collaboration
- Ability and willingness to contribute actively to the work of the EAG.
- Willingness to engage with issues outside their own specialist area.
Communication
- Strong communication skills.
