Job Overview
Whittington Hospital NHS Trust is recruiting for a Domestic to join its Facilities team.
The successful candidate will help maintain an appropriate and safe environment for patient care across the hospital.
The role includes:
- General cleaning
- Deep cleaning
- Preparation and presentation of patients’ meals and drinks
- Supporting the Facilities team
- Working flexibly according to service requirements
- Maintaining required cleanliness and hygiene standards
The successful applicant will be expected to demonstrate a flexible approach to duties and work collaboratively to meet the needs of patients and the wider healthcare environment.
Main Duties of the Job
The successful candidate will be expected to:
- Complete all required training and remain compliant with Trust requirements.
- Support and deliver processes within their allocated area of work.
- Work in different areas of the hospital when required.
- Complete Datix incident forms when necessary.
- Communicate professionally and appropriately using radios, telephones and email.
- Respond to distressing circumstances or deaths on wards with discretion and empathy.
- Complete mandatory training and updates.
- Manage required online training independently.
General Cleaning Duties
Responsibilities will include:
- Cleaning allocated areas, including toilets and bathrooms, on a daily basis.
- Vacuuming, dusting, cleaning surfaces and mopping floors.
- Working in accordance with the NHS National Standards of Cleanliness 2021.
- Cleaning hospital beds and, where required, remaking beds using clean linen.
- Safely managing and collecting clinical and non-clinical waste.
- Handling bagged soiled linen and taking it to designated collection points.
- Following Trust policies relating to waste segregation.
- Reporting incorrect waste segregation to the appropriate supervisor.
- Completing cleaning checklists accurately.
- Signing off cleaning activities to confirm that areas have been cleaned within the required timeframe.
- Supporting cleanliness audits and taking remedial action where standards are not met.
- Carrying out deep cleaning of floors and hospital areas throughout the year.
Ward Meal & Drinks Service
The role also involves supporting patient food and drinks services.
Duties may include:
- Preparing patients’ food and drinks.
- Serving meals and beverages to patients.
- Clearing up after food and drink services.
- Using a tablet as required during food service.
- Recording food wastage at the end of food service.
- Reporting problems with food-related equipment.
- Paying attention to the presentation of beverages and meals.
- Cleaning kitchen and dining areas.
- Washing crockery and cutlery.
- Cleaning food-service equipment, cupboards, worktops and flooring.
- Reporting equipment faults to the supervisor.
- Reporting faults with building fabric when identified.
Person Specification – Education & Qualifications
Essential:
- Basic education.
- Ability to read and write.
- Basic numerical skills.
Desirable:
- Basic Food Hygiene Certificate. Training is provided by the Trust.
- NVQ Level 1 or previous cleaning experience in a similar role.
- Ability to use electronic devices, including PCs and tablets, to a proficient standard.
Skills & Abilities
Applicants should be able to:
- Prioritise tasks and use their own initiative when dealing with multiple cleaning requests.
- Order and serve food to patients using a tablet.
- Follow verbal and written instructions.
- Follow cleaning schedules accurately.
- Use cleaning equipment, including equipment of an industrial standard.
- Lift and move items and equipment required for cleaning and catering duties throughout the shift.
- Electronically order required cleaning supplies.
- Follow Trust hygiene requirements covering hand washing, uniforms, jewellery and personal hygiene.
- Work effectively as part of a team.
- Complete assigned duties within the required timeframe.
- Communicate effectively with colleagues, supervisors, NHS employees and patients.
- Respect patient confidentiality.
- Demonstrate flexibility regarding work, hours and duties.
- Speak fluent English to an appropriate standard.
Knowledge & Experience
Essential:
- Knowledge of NHS colour coding.
Desirable:
- Previous NHS experience as a cleaner.
- Previous NHS experience handling food.
- Knowledge of food safety colour coding.
