About the Role

The Office of the Public Guardian protects people in England and Wales who may lack the mental capacity to make certain decisions about areas such as their health and finances.

The successful candidates will join the Supervision and Investigations Service (SIS) within the Operations Directorate. The team supports the Public Guardian by supervising deputies and guardians, reviewing concerns and taking appropriate action where necessary.

As an Executive Case Manager, you will manage complex cases and investigations, analyse information from multiple sources and work with colleagues, legal and policy teams, deputies and other stakeholders to resolve cases effectively.

The role provides an opportunity to contribute to service improvements while supporting vulnerable people and helping ensure that deputies carry out their legal responsibilities appropriately.

Key Responsibilities

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Managing a caseload of complex cases or investigations and using available resources effectively.
  • Monitoring case performance against key milestones and adjusting priorities when demands conflict.
  • Analysing information, management data and feedback from deputies and third parties to identify issues and trends.
  • Working with colleagues to resolve problems and improve service performance.
  • Maintaining a professional and responsive approach when supervising and investigating deputies.
  • Participating in management meetings, business forums, working groups and committees.
  • Building effective working relationships with colleagues across the OPG and external stakeholders.
  • Seeking advice from Legal and Policy teams where appropriate and following relevant guidance.
  • Producing witness statements when required.
  • Occasionally attending court.

Requirements / Person Specification

Candidates should be able to demonstrate:

  • Experience of managing and resolving complex cases or investigations using information from multiple sources.
  • Strong written, telephone and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to work independently and manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • The ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, other OPG teams and external stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Teams, PowerPoint and Excel.

Desirable experience includes:

  • Knowledge of the Mental Capacity Act (MCA) and its Code of Practice.
  • Understanding of the impact of Court of Protection, legal and policy decisions and how they can be applied operationally.
  • Experience of leading and motivating teams, particularly during change.
  • A focus on maintaining and improving customer service.

Working Pattern and Hybrid Working

The role offers full-time, part-time, job-share and flexible working options.

New starters in the Nottingham Supervision team are required to attend the office full-time, 37 hours per week, during the first three weeks of technical training.

Following this initial training, candidates will continue training and consolidation in the office. Part-time arrangements can commence during this period.

The consolidation period is expected to last up to six months. Once performance, conduct and probation requirements are met, hybrid working may be available, combining office and home working.

Staff are also expected to work from their base location on a weekly basis in line with current Civil Service requirements, subject to reasonable adjustments.
