Support Assistant

Portsmouth City Council is recruiting a Support Assistant to work within a Category 2.5 Sheltered Housing Scheme in Portsmouth.

About the Role

You will join a Support Assistant team working under the guidance of the Scheme Manager.

The role involves providing day-to-day assistance to residents according to their individual needs. Depending on circumstances, this may include domestic support, reassurance, assistance during emergencies and occasional support with personal care for residents who are more frail.

You will also work with external professionals and residents’ families where additional support is required.

Key Responsibilities

Your duties may include:

  • Providing practical day-to-day support to residents according to their individual needs.
  • Offering domestic assistance where required.
  • Providing reassurance and support to residents.
  • Responding appropriately to emergencies within the scheme.
  • Assisting some frailer residents with personal care when necessary.
  • Managing challenging situations calmly and professionally.
  • Liaising with care agencies, Adult Social Care, GPs, chemists and residents’ families.
  • Spending time with residents to understand their support requirements.
  • Recording relevant information on residents’ support plans.
  • Keeping residents’ records updated when appropriate.
  • Assisting with serving meals to residents.
  • Handling and accounting for cash collected from residents where required.
  • Working as part of the wider Support Assistant team.

Training and Development

The Scheme Manager will provide induction and guidance to help you develop confidence in the role.

Additional training will also be available to support your professional and personal development.

  • Ability to remain calm when dealing with challenging situations.
  • Basic IT skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Word and Outlook.

  • Willingness to work at other sheltered housing schemes when required.
  • Flexibility with working hours to meet the needs of residents and the service.

The ability to communicate comfortably with customers and provide advice in accurate spoken English is essential for this position.

Working Pattern

This is a part-time, on-site position.

Although the main workplace will generally be one sheltered housing scheme, you may be required to work at other Category 2.5 schemes according to operational requirements.

You will also need to be flexible with your working hours to meet the needs of residents and the service.

Salary and Benefits

The advertised salary is £27,346 to £29,170 per year.
