About the Role

As a Family Support Worker, you will work directly with children, young people and adults, helping families navigate challenges and build on their strengths.

You will be part of a diverse, multi-disciplinary team and work closely with social workers, health professionals, education services, housing teams and voluntary sector partners to provide coordinated support to families across Luton.

The role focuses on early intervention and practical support to help children, young people and families achieve positive outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

You will:

  • Build positive working relationships with families, children and young people.
  • Assess needs with families and agree appropriate plans and targets.
  • Provide practical, person-centred support.
  • Work collaboratively with professionals from different agencies.
  • Produce clear and concise reports, particularly where children’s wellbeing and protection are involved.
  • Organise your workload and use your own initiative.
  • Contribute to decision-making with appropriate guidance.
  • Support families to build on their strengths and overcome challenges.

What You’ll Need

Applicants should have the ability to develop effective relationships with families, children, young people and professionals from different agencies.

You should have an understanding of:

  • Child development.
  • The impact of deprivation, abuse and discrimination.
  • How these issues can affect children, families and service delivery.
  • Assessing needs and developing appropriate support plans.

A relevant qualification such as NVQ Level 3 in Childcare or equivalent is required, together with relevant training or experience working with children and families.

You will also need to:

  • Communicate confidently and effectively in spoken English.
  • Organise your workload and work using your own initiative.
  • Travel across the Borough as part of the role.
  • Work evenings and weekends when required.

Application Process

Due to the nature of the role, the successful applicant will be required to undergo the appropriate level of criminal record disclosure.

The post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. Applicants will therefore be required to declare relevant cautions and convictions in accordance with the applicable legislation.

A criminal record will not automatically prevent someone from being appointed. Luton Council will consider whether any offences are relevant to the role and whether they present a risk.

As this is a public-facing position, applicants must demonstrate the ability to converse and provide effective help or advice fluently in spoken English.
